Ft. Sill trainees talk thrills of heavy artillery

LAWTON, Okla. -- Ft. Sill is often called the home of the artilleryman and Freedom 43 TV recently got an inside look at why. We were invited to a capstone training course for new army soldiers.

They were practicing in the prairie around the post after a five-week round of training in the latest artillery tactics.

"It was amazing, there's just a thrill and that shock that goes through you when you are firing a gun down a range," Ethan Todd said of his first time firing the artillery.

This class included 58 soldiers, two from right here in Oklahoma.

Both say they're excited about their new line of work.

"After the first one, I fell in love so. Well, and today was the first one," Moore native Kris Martinez said.

The artillerymen also had the chance to learn on the newest Howitzer, or cannon, in the army.

It's made completely of titanium and costs about $2 million.

"If they mess it up, the chief will stop, show him what he's doing wrong and we'll start it over," SSgt. Donald Schoolcraft said.
